What kind of name is that for a musical group? No one knows, and no one is willing to tell of its origins - “It’s a closely guarded secret” says founding musician Rusty Jacobs. “We’ve never told anyone, and we’re not going to start now.” Rusty went on to describe their music: “It’s sort of a combination between Celtic, American folk, and sea chanteys - all with our own twist.” What Rusty didn’t mention is that The Woods Tea Company is as well known for its wit and humor (almost) as for its virtuoso musicianship. During each performance, The Woods Tea Company pulls from a cache of over a dozen instruments: Mike Lussen on vocals, tin whistles, guitar, and bodhran; Howard Wooden on vocals, bass, guitar and concertina; Chip Chase on vocals, fiddle, banjo and guitar; and Rusty Jacobs on vocals, pennywhistle, guitar and bodhran. The band started out playing to small college audiences in Burlington, VT and expanded to coffeehouses and Irish pubs. Folk legend Woody Guthrie was an early inspiration for the band. After building a solid reputation in New England, The Woods Tea Company started touring on the concert circuit nationwide including noted performances at New York’s Lincoln Center, The Chautauqua Institute and an appearance on National Public Radio who labeled them “Vermont’s hardest working folk group”.
