With a goal of celebrating all of those women who work so hard and with such dedication in their church kitchens, producer/director Curt Wollan, of the Twin Cities Troupe America, teamed with the creators of the best-selling book “Growing Up Lutheran” to create “The Church Basement Ladies”. The show is aimed at all of the ladies, whether they are Lutheran, Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian or Catholic, whose toil and time form one of the pillars of their churches. You all know at least one of these “steel magnolias” of the church: your mom, an aunt, or just a good friend. Maybe it’s even you? Set in the mid 1960s in a small rural Lutheran church, “The Church Basement Ladies” features five distinct characters: the church’s pastor, the matriarch of the kitchen, her two younger assistants, and a college-age girl. The women organize the food while discussing and singing about the problems of the day - be they how many pounds of potatoes are needed for the Christmas dinner, or how to fix the broken furnace while preparing a funeral dinner for the church custodian, or preparing the wedding feast for the youngest of the women on the hottest day of the summer. Along the way subjects like “I’m washing and you are all drying” might arise, or will the young lady marry the favored Lutheran fellow, or will she fall for the Catholic boy? Of course they keep the pastor on track, share and debate recipes and stave off potential disasters all the while thoroughly enjoying (and tolerating) each other. Funny and full of great wit, wisdom and music, “The Church Basement Ladies” will delight every audience member in town as they identify with one or more of the colorful characters on stage, just below the “House of God”. This is most certainly true!
